Colour Psychology - Pink

February - The month of Love.

It seems only right that this month I take a look at the colour psychology of pink.

Feminine and romantic, affectionate and intimate, thoughtful and caring. Is it any wonder why we refer to it as the colour of love.

A fact you may or may not know, pink is a tint of red and interestingly, red is the only colour that has an entirely separate name for its tints. Tints of blue, green, yellow, etc. are simply called light blue, light green and so forth. With this in mind, pink has the power to change how you feel by simply changing the tone of the colour. The deeper the pink, the more passion and power it exhibits but a soft rose calms and reassures our emotional energies. Evokes feelings of nostalgia and innocence.

To ensure you do not create a room which could be portrayed as immature or girlish use tones such as grey and black to create a more sophisticated room.

Painted Stairs

Happy Weekend everyone, hope you've all had a great Saturday.

I been a little bit crazy today! While my husband has been at football, I decided to start a new project in the house........ and have completely ripped up the carpet on our staircase! Eek!

But, never fear, I have it all under control! Husband might say otherwise! The carpet needed replacing this year anyway, darling Bobby Cat got his claws into the carpet when he was a kitten so it was destroyed, plus the fact I hate it! I decided to do a little investigating this afternoon and found some nice wood underneath. Not perfect, there are paint splats and dark paint borders down the steps but I think I can save it.

I have managed to remove all the carpet grippers, nails and staples and it is ready to sand. I already know exactly what I want and thought I'd share my ideas with you.

This has proved to be extremely cost effective, now we don't need to splash out on a new carpet and it is going to save me so much time hoovering because that carpet was absolutely awful to hoover!  So, if you need some new ideas for your stairs, here are some more inspirational images.

There is nothing quite like curling up on a lovingly worn leather Chesterfield sofa or side chair. Leather patinas beautifully with frequent use and becomes more desirable over time. I have a special affinity for all leather design elements and furnishings. Do you love worn leather too? Take a look at some of my favorite images of leather and other addictive interior decor.

Besides the comfy side chairs and the exotic zebra rug, the sofa in this space is just begging to be sat on. I love the mismatched furnishings and design elements of this room.

Looking for living room design ideas? An egg chair is shown here in the most unusual upholstery, bomber jacket finished leather. It would be so handsome in a pair flanking either side of a large mid-century modern velvet sofa.

An ornately carved French chair is unexpectedly covered in warm caramel leather with a stately monogram giving it a touch of self importance.

Ooh, who doesn't love a comfy leather club chair in a pair? These two are slightly different in style but they work so well with the portrait wall in this entry.

Let's take a break from my leather obsession and introduce my affinity for books of every age, color, design and topic. This library/dining room is a favorite of mine. A girl can dream can't she?

Ok, one more design addiction, vintage suitcases, one can't have too many. Besides they work terrifically stacked as a side table or at the foot of the bed in a bedroom design. Can you imagine travelling with one on a Grand Tour of Africa in the Victorian days? Sigh.

Ok, back to leather. This loveseat looks like it was custom made for this corner. How perfect! Love the swing arm lamp for reading and handiwork.

Books and leather in one spot makes me smile. Isn't this a beautifully eclectic interior design?

Colour psychology - Blue

Hello my design lovelies, I recently started a monthly feature with Finishing Touch Interiors and incase you missed my blog with Sarah last week, you can also catch it here a week later.

My first blogging series will take a look at colour psychology and how it can affect you and your home.

The very first step I take with a client is to go through a consultation to learn more about them and there home, how they want to use the space and how they want their home to make them feel. It is during this stage that we also look into colour. What colours do you love? which colours do you dislike? How do you want to feel when you enter the room? Relaxed, revitalised, energetic. Every colour can impact your mood and emotions and therefore it is very important to chose the correct colour. I am going to start looking at all the colours of the rainbow throughout this series and this week it is all about blue.

Blue calms the mind, represents the ocean and the sky stirring feelings of tranquility, peace and even security. This would explain why blue is a hugely popular colour, at the end of a hard day you want to relax in a calm haven, a place to unwind. This colour can work with any design, if you want a modern decor then look towards a dark navy or if you are a lover of shabby chic, a soft feminine blue hue similar to the images above will work perfectly.

Remember, your home should be somewhere that you want to come back to at the end of the  day so it is worth taking the time to look at colour and the psychology. Treat yourself as a client, ask all the important questions and create a dream home.
